Tl;dr – Point transfers from Citi ThankYou Rewards to American Airlines AAdvantage Miles are now live.

Big news on the transferable currency front today. Citi has added American Airlines as a direct transfer partner at a 1:1 ratio. This is a huge development as it marks the non-temporary transfer relationship between American Airlines and a major bank.

American Airlines’ AAdvantage loyalty program, to me, remains one of the stronger programs for redeeming miles for fantastic redemptions. As such, having another method to stockpile miles for those redemptions makes points and miles scheming all the better.

Citi also recently released its newest premium credit card, the Citi Strata Elite Card. As the card currently offers an 80,000-point welcome bonus (100,000 points if you apply in a branch), you could be well on your way to a Japan Airlines first-class redemption if you transfer some of those ThankYou Rewards points to American Airlines to book your JAL seat!
