Courtesy of Reddit, I stumbled upon this pretty cool image depicting a Boeing 707’s side engine:

As Redditor 406highlander explains:

“That’s what vintage jet engines look like with the covers off. Normally these are covered over with metal panels, but the panels have been removed for maintenance inspection purposes, or possibly this jet is on display at a museum.

Early passenger jets like this Boeing 707 were spectacularly noisy, so they had to be fitted with some kit to reduce the noise to allow them to continue flying and meet modern airport noise level restrictions; the hush kit is the bit at the back (right side in the photo) that looks like rocket boosters.”
