Tl;dr – The Big “M” will open three of its luxury brand properties in Canada’s third-largest city.
Marriott recently announced it will bring to Calgary a JW Marriott, a W Hotel, and an Autograph Collection property. The three hotels will be part of a mixed-use development project valued at just under $1.5 billion. As you might imagine, the project is expected to be a significant boon to the city’s economy.
We don’t have a ton of renderings of each property yet, but I’ll share what’s known about each hotel:
The hotel with the highest room count will be the Autograph Collection property. Presently, 320 guest rooms are planned. There will be several dining outlets, as well as a rooftop lounge area.
The JW Marriott is next with 248 rooms, though if you include the planned 120 residences, it will be bigger than the Autograph Collection. 62-stories tall, the JW, notably, will have a pool and some retail space.
The ‘smallest’ of the three hotels might be the most dramatic. Attached to the JW in a two-tower setup, The W will take root in a 69-story tower and feature 157 rooms and a whopping 239 residences. You can expect the signature restaurant, spa, fitness studio, and a rooftop bar.
As of now, the combined JW Marriott and W high-rises (when they debut) would be the tallest towers in Western Canada.
In addition to getting cold as sh*t, oil and gas, and hosting the Winter Olympics back in the late 80s, Calgary is known for the Calgary Stampede, coined as the ‘Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.’
Occurring every July and dating back to 1886, the Calgary Stampede is a ten-day extravaganza that celebrates both First Nations’ and Western culture: parades, rodeos, amusement parks – all that stuff.
The area in consideration for the development of these hotels will be near, none other than Stampede Park, the fairgrounds at which the Stampede takes place.
