You’ll Soon Need to Pay a Bit More to Leave Japan

​tl;dr – The ‘Sayonara Tax’ will increase.

​Japan’s National Tourism Organization (JNTO) and National Tax Agency recently disclosed that its departure tax for tourists will increase threefold.

Beginning July 1, 2026, travelers departing the country by air or sea will now pay ¥3,000 (~$18.60), up from ¥1,000 (~$6.20).

You were warned, and be sure to budget accordingly, as that additional $12.40 could mean you’ll need to forgo a few pieces of hon-maguro nigiri.
